Local MP Michael McCann did a friend a favour last week in the House of Commons and ended up meeting a very interesting young lady with a famous family tree.
Shadow International Development Minister Ivan Lewis asked Michael if he could take a young woman on work experience for a day because he had double booked. Michael agreed and made the necessary arrangements.
The young woman was Laura Pankhurst, the great, great granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst, the British political activist and leader of the British suffragette movement, which helped women win the right to vote.
In 1999 Time magazine named Pankhurst as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century, stating: "she shaped an idea of women for our time; she shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back."
Michael said, “Laura enjoyed her day in my office and she had the opportunity to see how busy it can be on a Prime Minister’s Questions day.
“As a politics student she is clearly following in her great, great grandmothers footsteps and she has a bright future ahead of her.”
Laura said, “I’d like to thank Michael and his team of Gordon and Jim for looking after me.
“Michael’s office runs at 100 mph and is non-stop, one minute they are preparing for PMQs, next minute they are dealing with phone enquiries from the constituency or an international issue.
“It was great to see and I have learned a lot.”
